Introduction

The History Committee is gathering a collection of stories.  Each entry provides a small vignette and together, they form a mosaic narrative, a pictorial history of our community. The committee was formed in 2011, to collect and archive material pertaining to the early years of our town. The physical collection is stored and accessible for research at town hall. From time to time, the committee will exhibit interesting material from its collection at town hall or at other local venues.

The idea for a web-based presentation started with a timeline featured in the exhibit at Bogue Banks Public Library in June and July 2013. That original timeline is the structural foundation of this website.

Included in the web-based presentation are many entries from the timeline, each accompanied by a narrative that tells a story.  Also included are stories that developed from the leading questions and comments of exhibit visitors.

We intend to use this web presentation as a continually growing repository of historical data, photos, letters, documents and the stories they tell about Pine Knoll Shores, stories that concern the notable and significant as well as the ephemeral and mundane.

How to Navigate this Website
Each subject page is listed in alphabetical order in the column on the right. Clicking on any one will take you directly to it. The Subject Listing heading at the top presents the pages group by subject matter as well as by time period. Within each page there are underlined items that if "clicked" will link you to a further discussion of that subject. History is about links, about context, about understanding the interplay of events, the forcing functions that surround an event. We will attempt to put events in context in an effort to provide a better understanding of why things are the way they are. Nothing happens in a vacuum.

Approach
The approach the committee is taking is non-academic. We are  not writing a doctoral thesis or history textbook. Our hope is that we’ve included some interesting snippets that people might enjoy,  stories that make Pine Knoll Shores unique. History with the fun bits left in.

Time Period
From the beginning of Bogue Banks to the present.

Geographical Area
The focus is on the Town of Pine Knoll Shores, but expanded to include the Roosevelt/Hoffman properties, other parts of Bogue Banks, and Eastern Carolina with links to the greater world beyond.

Contributors
History Committee members are writing most selections, combining material developed from the PKS collection with independent research. The site also contains contributions from other community authors, and material originally published in The Shoreline.
Often local history deals with the people, events and decisions we know first hand.  When you share your story, it could be added too.
You are all historians.
